Automotive industry Mexico: New cluster in the center area

With the collaboration of 10 companies, including Volkswagen and Audi, universities, the governments of Puebla and Tlaxcala, as well as the Secretary of the Federal Economy, an automotive cluster was created in the Clauz, which seeks to strengthen the sector of this Region to be more competitive.

Ulrich Thoma Kiwus, who will serve as president of the cluster, explained that the integration of the same, occurs from the installation of an Audi plant in Puebla, which, being on the border with the Tlaxcalan entity, implied an impact of 200 companies that supply goods and services. He mentioned that, through three committees, short- and medium-term objectives will be established to make the automotive and auto parts industries more competitive. Thoma Kiwus explained that the change of government in the United States caused the different productive sectors to be more competitive, especially the automotive.

So, how is the automotive industry in Puebla?

The poblano automotive sector is important because 16.5% of the units sold abroad have origin in the state, in addition of being the fourth largest producer of vehicles nationwide, with 83% of exports. In fact, this sector accounts for 40% of the state's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and during the previous six-year period received US $ 3 billion in Foreign Direct Investment, corresponding to 55.3% of the total, the secretary said. Also, in Puebla there are about 110 auto parts suppliers that generate about 40,000 direct jobs; Volkswagen of Mexico contributes around 13,000 and Audi, meanwhile, 4,800 according to information from the state government.

Marco Mena Rodríguez, the Tlaxcalteca governor, said that the Puebla-Tlaxcala metropolitan area, is the fourth largest in the country and in terms of opportunities for higher education, is the one that offers the most in Mexico, a situation that will benefit the cluster. Likewise, there are 48 auto parts providers of the sector, of which, 23 were installed in the last five years. These generated 3,683 new sources of employment, resulting in more than 10,000 jobs, according to data from the State Department of Economy.

As you can see, Mexico offers a lot of opportunities for various sectors in which the automotive industry is the one that has been growing fast in the last 5 years.
